JOB SUMMARY: 

To drive organizational excellence in Health, Safety and Environmental management by the general application of HSE and management principles, theories, concepts, and industry practices employing best practice and allocation of resources to monitor and improve the safety of work activities by reducing the likelihood of adverse effects of the business processes on workers employed by the company.

 

The incumbent serves as a resource for ongoing dissemination and technical interpretation of health, safety and environmental regulatory requirements and the validation of the effectiveness of the management’s Risk Control strategies/HSE program implementation. 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To coordinate the assessment, monitoring and reporting on the control of the safety of the activities performed by workers.
  • To implement strategies to enhance the company's safety performance and support the Group's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) objectives by establishment of planned schedules for conducting regular audits and inspections of the various operations to ensure compliance with the organization's HSE policies and procedures.
  • To ensure that incidents/accidents are investigated adequately and to compile suitable assessments in conjunction with the managers to reduce enterprise risk from identified deficiencies in the safe control of work or through programs/projects that utilize opportunities for improvement.
  • To deploy annual action plans with targets to achieve continual improvement in HSE performance by allocating resources to achieve compliance with the national laws, applicable regulations, and the company’s HSE policies and procedures.
  • To establish plans/schedules for HSE training programs to enhance awareness and ensure compliance among employees, contractors, and visitors engaged in both routine and non-routine tasks, as well as those providing services on behalf of the organization.
  • To conduct suitable periodic risk assessments and coordination of corrective action plans to ensure that the company operates in accordance with the Group and organisation’s safety management standards.
  • To form relationships with health, safety and environmental regulatory authorities and industry networks in the normal execution of the HSE department’s activities.
  • To ensure that suitable records of work conducted and documentation is maintained in accordance with established guidelines for storage and retrieval.
  • To oversee the planning and execution of emergency drills at a suitable frequency to ensure effective execution of emergency response by workers and the resources necessary are always maintained and available.
  • To continuously review and update Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and operating procedures to ensure alignment with business unit objectives, applicable legislation, industry regulations, and the Group HSE governance framework.
  • To ensure that safety controls and personal protective equipment are used in a manner that complies with the manufacturers’ instructions are always maintained in the required condition to provide the necessary protection to workers.
  • To perform other related duties as required by the job function.

 

GENERAL DUTIES:

Ensures compliance regarding the company’s certification to the interfacing areas:

  • Quality Management
  • Food Safety
  • Heath, Safety & Environmental Management System

Fulfill legal obligations regarding Occupational Safety & Health requirements as stipulated in the OSH Act 2004 as an employee.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BSc. Natural or Environmental Sciences/Engineering/Occupational Health & Safety
  • Diploma in Occupational, Health and Safety e.g., NEBOSH.
  • Minimum of Five (5) years’ supervisory experience in Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Management Systems. 
  • Formal certification in Auditing of Occupational Health & Safety systems or Process Safety Management, or Professional Management certification will be an asset.
  • Experience in a Food & Beverage Manufacturing or Process Environment will be an asset.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Must have a working knowledge of activity and outcome planning, budgeting, and cost control, setting of targets, manpower planning, safe systems of work, project management, contractor management and HSE Management systems. 
  • Must be able to set targets for direct reports and the wider organisation. 
  • Has a working knowledge of risk assessment, accident investigation, root cause analysis, HSE audits and inspections 
  • Must demonstrate safety leadership and have a sound understanding of the applicable HSE legislation, industry standards, codes, regulations e.g., the TT OSH Act, TT Environmental laws. 
  • Must be able to prepare management reports and deliver HSE presentations to leadership teams, work groups and peers. 
  • Must be able to collect and analyse data, maintain simple databases, compile written reports/charts, and publish presentations and technical papers.
